Nathan Appel. California.

"I've never been a true muse to any photographer.
To be so feels, by so many definitions, inferior to the photographer--to be the inspiration behind his work.
An image is a collaboration. It is a combination of vision, personality, current moods and impressions of both parties.
It is an intercourse of arts.
"some say that it is the muse who "penetrates" the artist. Not in a physical way of course, but to the heart of the artist."
-quoted from a personal email with a friend/photographer.

  1. You may be selling a muse short here, though I do understand where you are coming from. You once stated here, "This is one of my greatest desires, to impact others. I want to stimulate people to action, to dream, imagine, and to think, mostly to think." This, to me, is a very good definition of a muse.

You have perfectly summed up what an image of another person should be. An image that is not largely a collaboration between the artist and the model is quite flat and poor.

The artist and the model need to connect. In the best images produced, it is this relationship, this interplay of realities, that is somehow documented.

  3. I think a muse is a source of inspiration and guiding light in my art. she is a gesture of universal truth by every means.
when I am lucky to have such a connection with a model, she is all I think about <3

  4. There is a never ending, private, secret to my heart, inner battle of myself as 'muse'; (despite that I still cannot grasp her...who or what she is and all that she does).

...in that, I sometimes believe that I posses every attribute of this undefined creature.

Perhaps it is because I want to be the one and sole embodiment of her and not share her with other models that I separate myself from her to protect myself.

  6. all good thoughts on the "muse" concept ... I've come to accept that it is something different for each of us ... I've undeniable a great emotional connection with my muse(s) akin to be "in love" ... similar torment but with great artistic results ...
